A DEEP, COMPLETE PATH THROUGH THE CERAMIC PRACTICE.
LEARNING ALL THE TECHNIQUES TO UNLEASH CREATIVITY.
  • IT
Roberto Urso, 37 anni, pittore, falegname, ceramista - spirito creativo, lento e osservatore.
    Materiali, utensili e cotture incluse.

The course gives students a full overview of the world of ceramics, combining theoretical foundations with direct experience. It covers the fundamentals of materials and firing, through lessons, demos, and hands-on modelling - by hand and on the wheel - decoration, and glaze application. Building on the techniques learned, students are then guided and supported in developing a personal project, whether artistic or functional.
The program evolves across three fundamental moments - learning, experiencing, and realising - unfolded over ten lessons, as follows:
L1 _ introduction: essential theoretical foundations, from clay to ceramic, along with an introduction to the course and its teachers, followed by a first hands-on encounter with the material, pinching.
L2 _ modelling | coiling: an introduction to, and practice of, the oldest and most organic technique - building and texture.
L3 _ modelling | slab: an introduction to, and practice of, slab-building - a deliberate, considered gesture.
L4 _ modelling | wheel: an introduction to, and practice of, wheel-throwing - centring, forming, and distortion.
L5 _ modelling | wheel: continued practice on the final stages of wheel work -trimming and assembly.
L6 _ project: launch of the personal project - design, strategy, and work on a piece of the student's choosing, guided, reviewed, and accompanied by the teachers.
    L7 _ project: work continues.
L8 _ project: completion of the work and preparation for firing, followed by an introduction to the kiln - loading techniques and firing cycles.
L9 _ surface: a brief theoretical introduction to glazes, then glaze application on students' pieces.
L10 _ final critique: a closing session when work is complete, to observe results and reflect - considerations that can only emerge in the end.
The course welcomes anyone who wants to learn ceramics seriously, in its full complexity - and, therefore, its full beauty - whether starting from scratch or building on experience already gained. There is no required starting level: we meet each student where they are. The very small group size allows teaching to adapt to each person's experience, interests, and pace, alternating shared moments with individual guidance.
The course is also an introduction to the possibilities the studio offers beyond this particular programme: once the lessons end, students can continue developing their practice through open studio hours we call studiopass, take part in the teachers' and guests' thematic demonstrations - our studio sessions - and, above all, join the special firings and experiences the studio organises, including raku, bucchero, and gas firings.
A community of passionate makers - an intimate space in which to put down roots and share a passion.
    teachers
Giulia Valentino, 33, founder of the studio and teacher of artistic excellence in ceramics at Scuola Cova. An architect and designer, in 2019 she began an intense, visceral journey into ceramics — first in Spain, then in Japan, Taiwan, and Italy. A meticulous and patient teacher, deeply devoted to precision and technique, her own work explores a language that keeps the functional vocabulary of objects intact while quietly unsettling their form.
Roberto Urso, 37, painter, woodworker, and ceramicist — a creative spirit, unhurried and observant. A graduate of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, he came to the language of ceramics in 2020, first exploring hand-building techniques and then wheel-throwing. A curious teacher, he listens to what the tactile play with material suggests; in his own work, function is an unnecessary pretext for the expression of form and surface.
    30 hours — 10 lessons of 3 hours each.
    Starting: first week of October
    (Tuesday/Thursday — to be confirmed), 7–10pm.
